Dr. Mabel C. Tomás

On 19 March 2025 we remember and pay tribute to Dr. Mabel Cristina Tomás, who left an indelible mark on the scientific and academic community. In her honour, the laboratory she created will bear her name, in recognition of her invaluable legacy.

Her disciples, colleagues and CIDCA authorities accompanied her family on this special day, remembering with deep respect and gratitude her career and contributions. To pay tribute to her, a small ceremony was held in the presence of her husband, Dr. José Caram and her sons Bruno and Lisandro Caram, Dr. Silvana Stewart, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the UNLP, Dr. Gonzalo D. Veiga, Director of the CCT La Plata, colleagues and research colleagues who shared her academic and scientific path.

Dr. Tomás was the creator and head of the Research and Development Group on Oilseeds, Fats and Oils (GIDOGA) at CIDCA. With a degree in Chemistry from the National University of Buenos Aires and a PhD from the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP), she has dedicated her life to research, teaching and training new generations of scientists.

She is an outstanding researcher at CONICET and professor of Food Toxicology, Bromatology and Toxicology and Chemistry at the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the UNLP, in addition to being a guest lecturer at several universities. She has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles, books and book chapters, and supervised several doctoral theses, master's theses and final projects.

Her impact transcended borders, including as President of the International Society for Fat Research (ISF), Chair/ViceChair of the Phospholipid Division of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS), member of the International Lecithin and Phospholipids Society (ILPS), member of the General Council of the International Chia-Link network and also of the Board of Directors of ASAGA - Asociación Argentina de Grasas y Aceites.

Her role as a mediator between international organisations was invaluable. She built bridges and created connections that went far beyond geographical boundaries, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of fats and oils.

Dr. Tomás dedicated her life to the advancement of science and technological innovation in the area of food, leaving a legacy of excellence and passion for knowledge.

On this day, we celebrate her life and contributions, ensuring that her name and work continue to inspire future generations.

At the same event, another plaque was placed inside the laboratory of the GIDOGA group, which was presented in September 2024 by the Chia-Link Network and ValSe Food in gratitude for the work carried out by Dr. Tomás.
